The 56th Session of the UN Statistical Commission and High-Level Forum on Official Statistics are being held

The 56th Session of the UN Statistical Commission and High-Level Forum on Official Statistics dedicated to data governance are being held from March 3 to 7, 2025 in New York.                Mr. Yusif Yusifov, Deputy Chairman of the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan participated in the events.

22 documents were submitted for the discussion within the session, 10 informational issues were reviewed. During the four-day session, discussions were held, and decisions were made on various topics, including population and housing censuses, the working methods of the Statistical Commission, the fundamental principles of official statistics, data and indicators for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, different fields of statistics, environmental-economic accounting, international statistical classifications, household sample surveys, data science, national quality assurance frameworks, regional statistical development, and matters related to World Statistics Day. Additionally, reports were presented on issues such as the informal economy, energy, finance, industry, price, human development statistics, the International Comparison Programme, common open standards for the exchange and sharing of data and metadata, the management and modernization of statistical systems, and follow-up to the policy decisions of the UN General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council. Azerbaijan’s position on the issues discussed during the Session, particularly regarding data and indicators for the 2030 Agenda and environmental-economic accounting, was formally presented to the participants. It was highlighted that the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, had put forward an initiative to include the 18th Goal on demining activities in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, it was noted that 2024 had been officially designated as the “Green World Solidarity Year” in Azerbaijan and that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, recognized as one of the most significant global intergovernmental events, had been successfully organized.

At the High-Level Forum on Official Statistics, current issues related to data governance were reviewed.
