Development of tourism
In January 2018, Azerbaijan received from 138 countries of the world 186.2 thousand or 16.4% more foreigners and stateless persons compared to same period of last year. 30.7% of the arrivals were from the Russian Federation, 24.5% - Georgia, 7.4% - Iran, 13.0% - Turkey, 4.4% - the United Arab Emirates, 1.7% - Iraq, 2.2% - Ukraine, 16.2% were citizens of other countries, and 0.1 percent were stateless people. 70.0% of the arrivals were men and 30.0% were women.
There has been a significant increase in the number of visitors from the Gulf countries except Iran. Compared to January of last year, the number of Kuwait citizens arriving in Azerbaijan has increased for 6.4 times, the number of citizens of Oman – 2.1 times, Saudi Arabia – 2.6 times, Bahrain – 2.9 times, the number of citizens of the United Arab Emirates – 1.5 times, Iraq – 1.5 times and Qatar - 2.7 times. The number of arrivals from Iran decreased to 5.3 times. The total number of arrivals from the Gulf countries has increased by 35.2% and amounted to 32.9 thousand persons.
Thus, in January 2018, the number of arrivals from EU members decreased by 7.0% and amounted to 5.8 thousand, and from the CIS countries increased by 6.9% and amounted to 67.3 thousand.
During this period, 62.0% of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 37.3% - air and 0.7% - water transport.
The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad in 2017 decreased by 3.0% compared to the last year and amounted 299.3 thousand persons. 32.6% of the country citizens travelled to Georgia, 23.8% - Iran, 23.4% - Russian Federation, 12.5% - Turkey, 1.9% - Ukraine, 1.5% - United Arab Emirates, 4.3% to other countries. 67.6% of the travelers were men and 32.4% were women.
78.3% of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 20.8% - air and 0.9% - water transport.
