Drug-related Crimes
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 4145 or 27.8 percent of 14928 criminal cases recorded in January-July 2021 were related to the illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, which is 42.7 percent more in comparison with the same period of last year. 57.9 percent of them was illegal purchase, storage, preparation, processing, transportation of drugs or psychotropic substances in excess of their personal consumption without the purpose of sale, 35.7 percent the same actions for sale, as well as the production, shipping or illegal sale of these substances, 4.6 percent cultivating illegal crops containing drugs, 1.7 percent illicit trafficking of highly potent or toxic substances for sale and 0.1 percent other crimes.
During the reporting period, 2757 offenders were detained for the illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, 2719 of them were involved in criminal responsibility, while 38 of them were exempted from criminal responsibility according to the law.
73.7 percent of people who committed a crime were those never worked and studied, 35.0 percent of them were previously prosecuted. 2,5 percent were women. 0,2 percent of the offenders were children aged 14-17, 7.9 percent young people aged 18-24, 18.0 percent 25-29, and 73.9 percent 30 and older.
In January-July 2021, 1947,4 2984,2 kilograms of drugs were 1947,4 kilograms heroin, 618,9 kilograms marijuana, 245,5 kilograms opium, 57.5 kilograms hashish, hashish oil and resin, 114.9 kilograms other drugs and powerful means.
