Demographic situation in Azerbaijan

The number of populations recalculated based on the result of the census conducted in 2019 was 10151517 for the state of the July 1 2023 (except the population in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan where the Russian peacekeeping contingent was temporarily deployed). The number of populations per square kilometer is 117 persons.

54,6% of the population is urban, 45,4% is rural residents, 49,8% is men, 50,2% is women. At present, there are 1010 women per 1000 men.

On January-February of current year 53918 newborns by country were registered by the region (city) Registration Departments of the Ministry of Justice and this indicator made 10,7% per 1,000 population. 53,2% of newborns were boys, 46,8% were girls. 1580 of newborns were twins, 75 were triplets and 4 quadruplets.

30165 deaths were registered in the country during the first six months of 2023 and the rate of deaths per 1000 population decreased from 6,5 to 6,0 in comparison with the corresponding period of the last year.

During the first six months of the current year 24146 marriages and 10631 divorces were registered by the region (city) Registration Departments of the Ministry of Justice and the number of marriages decreased from 5,8% to 4,8% and the rate of divorces increased from 1,5% to 2,1% per 1000 population compared to the corresponding period of the last year.

On the January-June of the current year the relevant authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Migration Service registered 1907 persons arrivals to Azerbaijan for permanent residence and 1288 person departures from the country and migration positive balance made up 619 persons.
